Welcome Tomofon v1.2 and Loney Tunes!

A major update, adding MPE support, body resonance and much more

Since the release of Tomofon - Real Audio Synth, we have been overwhelmed by the feedback and music made. We have also been working and are now happy to announce that we are releasing a major update of Tomofon. This new 1.2 version adds MPE support, body resonance, multiple filter options, custom tuning and much more. AND we are also releasing a new Audio Model Pack, “Loney Tunes”.

We launched Tomofon in December 2022 and have since then released a number of Tomofon Audio Model Packs. Now the time has come for the mothership product itself to receive a major update. We want to expand the user experience and sound creation possibilities even further. At the same time we are also releasing a new addition to our line of Audio Model Packs together with Loney Dear and Emanuel Lundgren.

Unique Audio Models Open Up Unique Playability

We have always felt that Tomofon and its unique 'Audio Model' format, capable of containing thousands of waves extracted from ordinary audio files, are suitable for MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression).

The waves, and how they're structured, lay the groundwork for an instrument that is highly flexible and instantly expressive. This can truly be enjoyed to the full with an instrument that supports MPE. Thanks to the new Tomofon MPE mode that is part of v.1.2, users can utilize pitch bend and controllers in a polyphonic manner, unlocking even greater expressive possibilities.

In this video, you have the chance to listen to a snippet of Loney Dear's new song 'All Things Go,' which is performed solely using Tomofon v1.2. This song will be included in Loney Dear's upcoming album, set to be released early next year. A fun fact is that the actual recording made during our filming session will be the version featured on the album. One cannot plan for magic; it simply happens.

Tomofon v1.2 - What does it include?

This new update resonates not only with MPE users but also with a broader user base. The update includes the ability to assign a 'Body' to each patch, enhancing the realism of acoustic models by simulating the natural characteristics of various resonant enclosures. Users can choose from a diverse selection of bodies, ranging from large wooden boxes to metallic materials.

In response to user feedback we have also expanded the filter capabilities of Tomofon. In addition to the existing low-pass filter, users can now switch to high-pass and band-pass filters and choose between two different slope options (12 dB/oct or 24 dB/oct).

When it comes to importing files, Tomofon v1.2 now also supports the import of .tun files, allowing users to utilize custom tunings in their compositions. This feature caters to musicians exploring custom musical scales and tuning systems.

Furthermore, We have made several convenient updates to improve the user experience of Tomofon. Among other improvements, the audio model editor now features a zoom and scroll function, making it easier to work with audio models containing numerous waves. The curve tool has also been enhanced, allowing users to create more precise and intricate modulations.

We hope these v1.2 additions and improvements to Tomofon will further solidify its position as a uniquely versatile and user-friendly instrument, empowering you to truly explore new sonic territories.

NEW Audio Model Pack by Loney Dear and Emanuel Lundgren

We have been longtime friends with Emil Svanängen, known in the music world as Loney Dear. Even before Tomofon was released, we provided Emil with the instrument to gather his opinions and see what kind of music he would create. One day Emil introduced us to his longtime companion Emanuel Lundgren, the founder of the band “Im from Barcelona” and a true sound and synth enthusiast.

Emil and Emanuel were working on a new album and began exploring Tomofon and the possibilities of MPE. This collaboration resulted in a unique Audio Model Pack called “Loney Tunes”.

The pack is centered around instruments and sounds mostly played by Emil Svanängen. It includes sounds that often appear in Loney Dear's music, such as piano, flute, clarinet, violin, saxophone, and voice. There's also an instrument based on an old analog drum synth (Blackhawk) and one based on field recordings of construction sites (Chaos).

“Instead of creating perfect, natural-sounding instruments, we have included all the grit, noise, and randomness. Perfect stuff for drones and ambient music. To quote Donna from Twin Peaks: 'It's like having the most beautiful dream... and the most terrible nightmare, all at once.’” - Emanuel Lundgren
